Firearms Control Act
Dedicated Sport Shooter (DSS) status
A practical guide for Compak SA members on obtaining and maintaining Dedicated Sport Shooter status through active participation in Compak Sporting Clays.
What is Dedicated Sport Shooter status?
Dedicated Sport Shooter (DSS) status is a recognition granted by an accredited sport-shooting association to a member who actively and regularly participates in a registered shooting sport. Under the South African Firearms Control Act (Act 60 of 2000), holding DSS status affects how you may licence firearms for sport shooting — typically under Section 16, and, for dedicated members, with additional benefits around firearm quantities, ammunition and renewal cycles that a general Section 16 licence does not provide.
How Compak SA supports the pathway
Compak SA is the national body for Compak Sporting Clays in South Africa, affiliated to FITASC in Paris. Our sanctioned competitions at affiliated clubs count as recognised sport-shooting activity for members who are working towards or maintaining DSS status. Participation is captured against your member profile so you can produce an activity record when applying for or renewing a dedicated licence.
Typical participation criteria
Individual associations set their own criteria, but they are broadly consistent. As a Compak SA member you should expect to:
- Be a paid-up member in good standing for a qualifying period (commonly 12 months).
- Take part in a minimum number of sanctioned shoots each year at affiliated clubs.
- Keep records of participation — entries, scores and dates — that your association can verify.
- Comply with the safe-handling, storage and transport requirements of the Firearms Control Act.
How to apply
- Join Compak SA and an affiliated club through our membership page.
- Shoot regularly at sanctioned events — your entries and results are logged automatically.
- Once you meet the participation threshold, request a Dedicated Sport Shooter endorsement letter from Compak SA together with your activity record.
- Submit that letter and your record with your Section 16 firearm licence application (or renewal) to the SAPS Central Firearms Register.
Important note
This page is a plain-English overview for members and prospective members. It is not legal advice. Requirements under the Firearms Control Act change from time to time — always confirm the current rules with SAPS or a qualified firearms attorney before submitting a licence application.
