A faultless second day: Deon Steyn's 100 straight at Sterkfontein

On 1 February 2025, at the Sterkfontein Compak SA Trial, Deon Steyn put together the kind of second day shooters talk about for years: four ranges, one hundred targets, not a single miss.

The card reads 25, 25, 25 and 25. Four different layouts, four different sets of trap angles and speeds, and the same answer every time. Holding that rhythm across a full day of Compak asks a shooter to read each new stand correctly on the first bird, stay patient when the wind and light shift, and keep the same gun speed on target ninety-nine as on target one.

What makes a clean hundred so rare is the weight it gathers as it goes. Every target that falls makes the next one heavier, and the temptation to protect the score rather than shoot it grows with each stand. Deon simply kept shooting, closing out a total of 196 out of 200, first place overall and High Gun for the competition.

Very few shooters in our sport ever put a perfect hundred on the board. It is a benchmark for the rest of the field and a reminder of the standard being set at Compak SA trials, earned through hours of preparation long before the first call of "pull".
